“She didn't really want to do a series” Why Sarah Jessica Parker was reluctant to star in Sex and the City

There’s a Carrie Bradshaw quote for every important relationship or shopping moment we encounter in our lives. When Carrie ‘got to thinking’, many existential crises were firmly addressed and resolved, in under twenty minutes. That’s why we just can’t resist returning to our shoebox-shaped boxset as often as is socially acceptable.

But what can you imagine these pearls of wisdom being dispensed by anyone other than Sarah Jessica Parker?

Well, it turns out the actor almost turned down the role of the Upper East Side shopaholic sex columnist.

“Your girl is lovely, Hubble.”

In a blog written for Playbill, actor, writer and radio host, Seth Rudetsky has written about his conversations with Sarah Jessica Parker, saying how she told him:

“She was reluctant to do the pilot because she didn’t really want to do a series. However, she loved the script so she filmed it and then forgot about it.”

Months later she found out the show was picked up and she completely wanted to get out of it…she really didn’t want to be tied down to one job because she loved going from gig to gig and being, what she called, a “journeyman,” says Rudetsky.

“When Big colors... he rarely stays within the lines.”

“When Big colours... he rarely stays within the lines.”

Apparently the actor even tried to escape the role entirely:

“She tried various ways to get out of it including telling HBO that she would film three projects for free if they’d release her from her contract! Basically, they convinced her to honor her deal, and she now has no regrets,” (sic) Rudetsky writes.

It’s all rather a lot to digest, but Rudetsky softened the blow by telling us how much SJP loved playing the role of Carrie. So much so that she apparently said:

“There may be a project coming up involving all the ladies!”

Do we smell a sequel?
