George Clooney is geared to pleasing the masses this week. First we hear he's set for a guest spot on Downton. Then he appears in a video eloquently declaring his love for fiancée Amal Alamuddin.

... Could he be anymore brilliant?

Yes, there's nothing more guaranteed to move us than a fairly private soul like George making a statement of his personal feelings.

The 53-year-old Oscar winner and his bride-to-be were pictured together on the red carpet for the first time last weekend, at a celebrity fundraiser held at the iconic Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy.

During the Celebrity Fight Night evening, the actor took to the stage to accept a humanitarian award on behalf of the Andrea Bocelli Foundation and The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.

And his touching words of acceptance have now hit YouTube, to the delight of romantics everywhere.

"I want to thank all of you because for the last dozen years or so you've made me an honorary citizen [of Italy] and I've enjoyed every single moment of it," George tells the audience.

"I met my bride-to-be in Italy and I will be married in Italy soon, in a couple of weeks... in Venice of all places."

He goes on, "In closing, I would just like to say to my bride-to-be Amal that I love you very much and I can't wait to be your husband."

His last remarks were greeted by whoops of approval and a dramatic gasp of "Oh my God" from a woman in the audience.

George and Amal in their first red carpet appearance in Florence last weekend

George met Amal, a 36-year-old human rights lawyer, through a mutual friend at a charity event last September.

A friend of the couple told the Mirror, "At first Amal was playing very hard to get and would not take his phone number, which simply made George even more intrigued.

"In the end he managed to get her email address and began sending her a series of flirty messages. He was very up front and joked about the fact they were both considered the hottest people in their respected professions."

The pair enjoyed a whirlwind romance and got engaged in April.

Few details have emerged of their impending nuptials, although speculation has been rife as to when and where the ceremony will take place.

George did let slip in his speech on Saturday that at least part of the celebrations would take place in Venice, as opposed to the obvious candidate of his £19 million estate on Lake Como.

He also said the wedding would happen "in a couple of weeks", raising the possibility of it going ahead on the weekend of the 20 September.

He and Amal have posted their wedding banns in London's Chelsea Town Hall, indicating they may tie the knot there before moving onto Italy for further celebrations. Amal works in London and the couple have been spotted house-hunting together in the leafy neighborhood of Richmond.

Celebrity guests at one of Hollywood's most anticipated weddings are said to include Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, U2 Singer Bono, Matt Damon and Ellen Barkin - as well as newlyweds Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Speaking to the Mail, George's aunt Staria said Brad would play an important part in the proceedings. "I would say he [George] would choose Brad Pitt for his best man," she said. "They are good friends, I would think that’s who he’d choose."
