“I was emaciated”: Girl on the Train star reveals she was forced to lose weight for previous role

Over the past year or so, a steady stream of (rightly) furious A-listers have been blowing the whistle on the misogynistic underbelly of Hollywood.

Revelations have ranged from disturbing instructions telling women how to dress (Rose McGowan went viral after tweeting a casting call request that she wear a "form fitting tank that shows off [her] cleavage") to the degrading descriptions of female cast members in scripts ("blonde, fit, smokin' hot" and "as adorable as she is sexy" were low points).

Then, of course, there is the small matter of the gaping gender pay gap, as revealed by the Sony email hack.

Now, Girl on the Train star Haley Bennett has revealed she was previously asked to lose 20 pounds to act alongside Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore in the 2007 hit film, Music and Lyrics.

Speaking about getting her weight down to just 105 lbs (7.5 stone) to play the role of a popstar in the film, Bennett told The Sunday Times, "I was emaciated".

"I felt like I looked 100 years old," she added.

The 28-year-old actress also described how she went from the top of all the "one-to-watch" lists once the film was released to someone who was virtually unknown.

"At a certain point, I thought about selling the bags I was gifted to pay my rent," she revealed. "I had very little confidence when I was 18."

However, her career is now firmly on the rise after a decade in the industry.

"I had a conversation with a producer recently, who told me I should be like Grace Kelly and retire," she said.

"And I said, 'No, I don't want to be a princess. One day, I want to retire to an alpaca farm and make cheese'".
