Infographic of history’s greatest female adventurers

In an age where we plug directions into Google Maps and find commuting a burden, it's easy to forget that there was once a time when travel was an adventure. Some of the greatest female pioneers in history achieved their feats by embarking on long and far journeys.

So in honour of International Women's Day (on Saturday 8 March) travel website momondo.co.uk have created an infographic of ten women whose adventures rewrote what it means to be an explorer.

It features the likes of Jeanne Baret, the first woman to circumnavigate the world (though she had to dress as a man to do it) and Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean.

"They travelled far, they travelled wide, earning a series of famous firsts and finding their way into the history books as they crossed oceans and continents," reads an introduction on the travel website.
