Sandra Hebron: the films that define my life

The artistic director of the BFI's favourite films

Next week the 55th BFI London Film Festival rolls into town (12-27 October), bringing with it a cast of A-list celebrities. But it will also be the end of an era: artistic director Sandra Hebron steps down after 14 years. Before she hands on the baton, Stylist asked her: What are the films that define your life?

1. All That Heaven Allows (directed by Douglas Sirk)

"I was in my early teens when I first saw this Fifties melodrama about a widow who falls for a young gardener. She's beautiful, he's handsome - it's the perfect Sunday afternoon movie."

All That Heaven Allows, £14.99 (as part of a box set, amazon.co.uk

2. Ali: Fear Eats The Sould (directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder)

"This has one of my favourite scenes in any movie, an agonisingly sad dance sequence between two lovers. I was a student when I discovered this."

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul, £6.95, zavvi.com

3. Tokyo Story (directed by Yasujiro Ozu)

"An elderly Tokyo couple leave their home to visit their grown up children in Tokyo, only to find that the kids are too busy to be bothered. A brilliant portrait of the generation gap."

Tokyo Story, £9.99, amazon.co.uk

4. Sweetie (directed by Jane Campion)

"To end, a film that makes me smile, not cry. Campion wears her feminism lightly, and this darkly funny story of two sisters is told with a freshness and originality that gets you totally caught up."

Sweetie, £8.95, amazon.co.uk
