Actor James Franco became embroiled in controversy today after it was claimed that he propositioned a young fan on Instagram.

It is claimed that the 127 Hours star, currently appearing on Broadway, made contact with the fan, 17, after she tagged a picture of him on her Instagram page.

In the private message exchange, pictures of which have surfaced online, a man purporting to be Franco asks used 'Lucy' - who is visiting from Scotland - how long she is visiting and where she is staying and if he should book a room.

After asking the star to prove his identity, Lucy then mentions that she is not yet 18 and Franco attempts to clarify this before going on to ask for details of her location.

Posting on her Instagram page, Lucy let friends know about her decision to resist the advances of the actor, posting

"james franco asked me to meet him alone! It was really him and I rejected him!! wtf am I doing".

He wrote, "HOPE PARENTS KEEP THEIR TEENS AWAY FROM ME. Thank you."
