“It’s Bond, Jane Bond”: could the next 007 be a woman?

Forget Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Damian Lewis — if the Twitter rumour mill is to be believed, the next Bond could be a woman.

X-Files star Gillian Anderson has suggested she would be keen to play the role by sharing an image of herself in a mocked-up 007 poster and adding “It’s Bond. Jane Bond. Thanks for all the votes! (And sorry, don't know who made poster but I love it!) #NextBond”

The poster was actually created by graphic designer and Twitter-user Karla Carbajal, who lives in Argentina and is delighted that Gillian Anderson shared her work. (There really is an actual poster that you can buy, too.)

However, Gillian isn't the only actress putting herself forward for the coveted role. Quantico star Priyanka Chopra has also revealed that she would like to play the Secret Service agent.

In an interview with Complex magazine, Chopra addresses the suggestion that she would make a great Bond girl, and gives a truly badass response:

“In another lull between takes, conversation turns toward her appetite for stunts. She’s thrilled for her upcoming role as the icy villain in Baywatch, a part originally envisioned for a man (‘another barrier broken,’ she winks), and everyone agrees she’d make a great Bond Girl. ‘I get that all the time,’ she says with faux exasperation. ‘But fuck that—I wanna be Bond.’”

Chopra follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, who revealed back in 2010 that she once turned down the opportunity to play a Bond girl, telling movie executives that she would prefer to play Bond instead.

This would be great way to crack the glass ceiling, and we'd really love to see a woman smash some stereotypes by playing the iconic role. We do have one question, though; who would make the best Bond boy? We can definitely see Idris Elba emerging from the ocean in a tiny pair of swimming briefs...
