The recent success of the Gilmore Girls revival left us hoping that a Friends reunion might be on the horizon – but it seems as improbable as ever. Especially as Marta Kauffman, the show’s writer and creator, has said that she hates the idea of Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey all getting together again for coffees in 2016.
“They’d all be older, and it wouldn’t be the same, and people will only end up feeling disappointed, and then I’ll be embarrassed, and it would be terrible,” she said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
To paraphrase Chander: could she BE any more wrong?
Thankfully, Aniston decided to toss a bone to Friends fans everywhere during a positively flawless skit for Saturday Night Live – although she did drop a few truth-bombs about our obsession with the 90s show at the same time.
It all kicked off when Vanessa Bayers – who stars alongside Aniston in Office Christmas Party – sat down with Colin Jost for his Weekend Update segment, dressed in a pair of denim dungarees and with her hair styled to look like THAT iconic Rachel ‘do.
Using all of Rachel’s ‘signature voice inflections’, Bayers explained away our obsession with nostalgia by saying: “The 90s are great. You go to work, you go on dates, you go to cafes with your friends, and you all sit facing camera. Yeah.”
Cue Aniston suddenly pulling up a seat next to her, and pleading with her co-star to “drop that for a second”.
“Vanessa, what are you doing?” she asks. “Listen honey, I know you love Friends, and we had such a great time making our movie together… but you’ve really gotta try and stop texting me every day.”
She then asks Bayer to put her Rachel impersonation to bed, insisting: “Friends was like five million and five years ago, so we’ve really just gotta move on.”

However Bayer isn’t too impressed with Aniston’s request, arguing that her skit is “really great” and too good to be retired – only for Aniston to respond with a raised eyebrow.
“Is it a great bit though?” the 47-year-old asks. “It’s like, ‘What, oh, me? Wow. What?’… that’s not what I do!”
Aniston then slips into full Rachel Green mode faster than it’s ever taken the gang to bag their favourite table at Central Perk, going head-to-head with Bayers in an epic skit.
And, yes, it ends with both women screaming the line: “Oh, Ross!”
Sure, it only lasts for a minute or so, but there’s no denying that the skit is a work of comic genius – although it’s worth pointing out that, even though Aniston was happy to play along, she’s definitely not down for a reunion anytime soon.
She recently told ITV’s Lorraine Kelly: “I don't know what we would do. I think that period of time was sort of nostalgic, you know, there's something about a time - and I think why people have such an affection for it - there was something about a time when our faces weren't shoved into cell phones and we weren't checking Facebook and Instagram.
“We were in a room together, or in a coffee shop together and we were talking. And we've lost that.”
Hmm – we’re not convinced. After all, if Bridget Jones and Lorelai Gilmore can handle the fast-paced digital world of 2016, we’ve no doubt the savvy Friends gang can, too.
Roll on our reunion already…
