In news that will delight publishers and readers alike, JK Rowling has confirmed she is writing a new novel for adults.

The Harry Potter author has signed a publishing deal with Little, Brown Book Group, drawing to a close her relationship with Bloomsbury, who launched the Potter franchise.

"Although I've enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series," Rowling said. "The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher.

"I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life."

The news prompted a storm on Twitter, where Rowling's millions of fans around the world reacted with elation.

"JK ROWLING IS OUR QUEEN! I can't wait for her new book! Although it isn't a new Harry Poter book but still.. It's from Queen Rowling!" one person wrote, as another added, "JK ROWLING IS WRITING A NEW BOOK. Ohmygod!! As Ron would say 'Bloody brilliant!'"

The publishers gave no further clue as to the genre of the book, or when it will be released.
