Chrissy Teigen's reaction when John Legend broke up with her is just another reason to love her

There’s something slightly odd about the concept of ‘couple goals’, particularly when your knowledge of said couple is gleaned entirely from social media. By now, we should all be aware that a string of good photos does not a healthy relationship make – and that no matter how fabulous a celebrity duo’s life together may appear online and in magazines, the reality may not be so romantic.

Yet there are some celebrity pairings that it’s hard not to feel strangely invested in. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are one such pairing, as were Anna Faris and Chris Pratt (sob). Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are another – probably because they spend much of their time dismantling the myth of the ‘perfect’ couple.

Now, Legend has revealed some of the backstory to his much-Instagrammed marriage to Teigen – including how she handled it when he tried to call time on their relationship.

The pair, who started dating almost 10 years ago and married in Italy in 2013, appear to have the perfect life together: an adorable daughter, a beautiful home, and endless holidays. At the same time, Teigen has been praised for talking and writing openly about the challenges they have faced together, including their fertility struggles and her experiences of postnatal depression and anxiety (and she’s not a big fan of #relationshipgoals herself).

And in a new interview, Legend (real name John Stephens) has revealed that he and Teigen almost didn’t end up together after all. Speaking to The Guardian, the musician said that he once tried to break up with Teigen – but she wasn’t having any of it.

“I was really stressed and busy,” he said. “I was just like: ‘I’d just be happier single right now,’ and she was like: ‘No.’”

Within half an hour, Legend had recovered from his stress-induced relationship wobble, and the couple were back together. The rest, as they say is history. Praising Teigen, Legend said that the model and cookbook author “pushes me to be funnier” and “bolder”.

“Not because she’s trying to,” he added. “I think it’s just being around her.”

Teigen later chimed in on Twitter, adding her side of the story to their almost-split.

“It wasn’t a typical break-up,” she wrote. “He was on tour and his voice hurt and he was being a whiny face about everything and so yeah, I was like ‘no’.”

In the Guardian interview, Legend also discussed his predilection for talking politics on social media, a trait he shares with his wife (who was recently blocked on Twitter by President Donald Trump).

“I feel it’s not super controversial,” he said. “I think Trump is an embarrassment to the country. And his approval rating is terrible.”

Legend added: “It doesn’t feel like it’s foreign to me to express how I feel politically… When I talk about politics on Twitter, when I Instagram my daughter, these are just the things I’m thinking about and the things I care about.”
