Joss Stone on learning to laugh at her kidnap attempt, giving up a record deal and love inspiring her new album

It was one of the most sinister episodes to hit the headlines when two men were convicted for plotting to kidnap and murder singer Joss Stone. On the eve of releasing a brand new album the 28-year-old soul singer has revealed that the threat does still scare her although she has learnt to laugh about it.

Two Manchester men, Kevin Liverpool  and Junior Bradshaw, were jailed for the bizarre plot which unraveled back in 2011 after suspicious residents called the police. The pair had their sentences slashed on appeal last year to six-and-a-half years and 10 year respectively.

But talking to Jenni Murray on Radio 4's Woman's Hour this week Joss said she'd learnt to laugh about the incident although it did still spook her.

"I was always a bit of a wuss in my house," Joss admits. "I don't ever watch horror movies, I’m a bit scared of the dark - band members have to check behind the door and under the bed in my hotel rooms. But before I could rationalise it and say: 'Stop being so silly Joss there’s no one there.' But now…

"I get my Rottweiler to walk around the house and she checks for me."

Joss said she thought her inclusion in the Sunday Times Rich List may have led her to being targeted.

"These things..I think they are partly to blame with the guys who came and tried to do me in. It’s not true (how rich they said I was) I wish it was," she said.

"They came because they thought I had a safe of money- it was a bit rough wasn't it - kind of awkward.

"I don’t know why, I can only assume they thought I had a safe or maybe I annoyed them, I really don't know."

Joss also spoke about giving her record deal money back aged just 18 and starting all over again from the beginning after disliking the level of control they had over her.

"When I was about 18 I give it all back and started again," Joss told the show.

"I thought: 'What am i going to do with that money?' Alll I want to do is make make music. When I was signed it was like: 'Here is all this money - dye your hair and live your life under our rules and sing the songs we tell you to.' "

"That's not going to cut it for me.

"I gave the money back to EMI the label. I didn't want that. It was a horrible scenario for me artistically."

Joss says she's in a happier place now releasing a brand new album Water For Your Soul on July 31 which was produced by Damian Marley.

"The backbone is reggae, hip hop and R&B, I'm approaching it from a soulful viewpoint," Joss said.

"The cherry on the top is the Irish fiddles and Indian flutes.

"Stuck on you is the new record, it’s about being stuck in love when you wish you could walk away instead of being in love. I break up with my boyfriend every Wednesday.

"We like to keep the passion going," she joked.
