Kate Middleton joins the scouts

Toggles, campfires and good deed escapades will be added to Kate Middleton's agenda from today (5 January), as she takes on the role of voluntary scout leader.

St. James' Palace said Kate's love of the outdoors and passion for young people inspired her to join the scouts, where she is expected to help out in local branches near her and Prince William's home in North Wales.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who was a brownie in her youth, announced the move as part of a string of charity patronages she will now take on as a working royal.

The royal newlywed has accepted honorary positions at Action on Addiction, the National Portrait Gallery, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and The Art Room, a charity that helps disadvantaged children through art therapy.

The choices mean Kate will tackle a range of issues, from drug addition to terminal illness, and reflect her passion for art, sports and working with children.

"She is in a unique time of her life," a Royal spokesman told the Telegraph. “She has no children, her husband is in a full time job and is not a full time member of the Royal. She has the time to really get stuck into these new roles."

Kate has spent the past few months sifting through hundreds of applications from charities and organisations requesting her support and will likely follow the lead of other royals by taking on further honorary positions in the future.

But work will be put on hold at least temporarily next week when she turns 30, with her sister Pippa and brother-in-law Prince Harry reportedly in charge of party planning for the big day.
