'Not wow fantastic, wow sick. That’s not right, it’s not possible' Kate Winslet speaks out on body pressures

Kate Winslet interview.jpg

Kate Winslet has one of the most impressive CVs in Hollywood. She's starred in numerous block-busting films (Titanic, Contagion, Divergent), is the youngest ever actress to be nominated for six Academy Awards, and has won several accolades for her roles, including an Oscar for The Reader.

Yet despite all the Hollywood success, she's exactly the kind of person you can imagine being best friends with.

When we sat down for a chat with her recently, for her new film A Little Bit of Chaos, she was so charming and outspoken that we had to refrain from asking her if she fancied coming down the local and sharing a bottle of wine with us.

However, we did ask her about her new film, what she thinks about today's female role models and the topic of women being too scrutinized for their weight (she's very passionate about that matter).

"The media is so full of criticism of how people look and I think that creates a terrible pressure for young girls.

It’s important to remember that the world is a really fascinating place and it’s perfectly possible to open your eyes and enjoy each day and to be positive and to be happy and it’s through feeling that way that we learn to feel good about who we are and to respect ourselves."

During the interview she spoke about why she often chooses to play strong women. She also became very animated when we asked her about how women are often scrutinized for not losing weight quick enough after pregnancy.

"You know, it keeps coming up and people keeping saying “look how great she looks three weeks post-baby. Wow, fantastic!”, not wow fantastic, wow sick, I mean that’s not right, it’s not possible."

The 39-year-old has three children; Mia, who she had with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, Joe who she had with ex-husband Sam Mendes, and Bear Blaze who she gave birth to 16 months ago - her first child with husband Ned Rocknroll.

"My little boy is 16 months old now and honestly it's really only in the last three or four months that I've truly felt completely back to where I was before I had him. And that's the right way round."

In her new film she plays the Sabine, an unorthodox and wild gardener who is tasked by the king's principal gardener André Le Nôtre (played by Matthias Schoenaerts) to help create a part of the gardens of the Palace of Versailles.

Directed by Alan Rickman, who stars as king Louis XIV in the story, we see Sabine challenge the roles of the women at the time and fight her way through the politics of working for a royal.

Watch our interview below for more on what Kate thinks about female role models, women in the media and, er, boobs.
