“No one really knows what has happened in my life”: Kate Winslet is tired of being asked about divorce, Botox and baby weight

The doors to Hollywood life are never closed off when Kate Winslet is talking.

The star has spoken candidly about her frustrations towards tabloid speculation, how she views her two divorces and why she will no longer do nude scenes in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

“Just a couple of hours ago, my publicist sent an email saying that some journalist from the Daily Mail has a picture of me from an event last night and is saying that I appear to have lost all the baby weight and how did I do that? And do I want to comment on the fact that experts are saying that I’ve had Botox? I just get irritated by that s***,” says Winslet.

“First of all, the latter is 100 percent not true, and secondly, it’s f***ing 18 months later. Of course I’m going to get back at some point.”

The 39-year-old is also tired of the media assuming she leaves her family behind when she travels for work. In fact, she typically plans her films around her three children's school schedules.

“People assume that [actors] go off for months on end. A lot of journalists say to me, ‘So, I bet you’re looking forward to having some time with your kids,’ and I think, ‘I’m with them all the f—ing time.’ I don’t leave anyone behind; that’s just not the way it goes.”

Winslet says it hasn't been easy navigating the tabloid attention she's attracted since her breakthrough role in 1997's Titanic. “No one teaches you, and also no one particularly helps you. It’s a very specific thing to ask people to understand. ‘So-and-so was mean about me in the newspaper.’ ‘Oh, just ignore it.’ But you can’t, because it’s not true.”

“No one really knows what has happened in my life. No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last; no one knows why my second didn’t. And I’m proud of those silences.”

Winslet married her first husband indie filmmaker Jim Threapleton at the age of 23 with whom she had her first child, Mia. A year after divorcing, she married director Sam Mendes whom she has son Joe with and split from in 2010. The actress married Ned Rocknroll in 2012 and gave birth to their son Bear Blaze in December 2013.

“I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages, I really do, and it’s just those are the cards that life dealt me. I didn’t plan on its being that way,” Winslet says. “And f*** me, it hasn’t been easy, you know.”

As she approaches her 40th birthday (next week), Winslet says she has grown to be less critical of herself, particularly her body.

“Thank God all that s***’s evaporated,” she says. “We all focus on our bodies in our late teens and our early 20s, in a way that is just not cool or healthy. In your 30s, you become aware of staying fit. Now I view my physical self as an instrument that I have to keep going because I’m a mother, and I have to be as healthy as I can for those three people who need me—more than I need for myself to be in a f—ing nude scene.”

Having gone naked in 12 films, she says, “I don’t think I can get away with it now. I’ve never had a body double—that would feel like lying. So I am probably done.”

“I get really big when I am pregnant,” she adds. “There are things that will never go back, but in terms of physically feeling back and healthy, I do.” And that's what's most important.

Kate Winslet stars alongside Michael Fassbender in the Steve Jobs biopic out this month. Read her full interview at wsj.com.
