Madonna’s “badass” tribute to herself on Father’s Day: “I’m the mummy and the daddy”

On Father’s Day, our social media feeds were filled with photographs of men dandling babies on their knees, smiling alongside their beaming kids, walking their daughters down the aisle, and the like.

But Madonna, who recently adopted twins as a single mother, decided to reclaim the day for herself – sharing a collage of photographs of herself and her children on Instagram.

Each of the Vogue singer’s children makes an appearance in the post: to the right of Madonna sits her mini-me daughter, Lourdes, 20, from a previous relationship with Carlos Leon. To her left is David Banda, 11, who she adopted in 2006 with then-husband Guy Ritchie, and her 16-year-old son Rocco, whom she had with Ritchie. Standing behind them is 11-year-old Mercy James, who Madonna adopted solo in 2009.

Bottom left are four-year-old twins Stella and Esther, whom she adopted solo earlier this year.

Emblazoned across the photograph is a banner which reads “Happy Mother’s Day Madonna” – a sentiment which the musical icon continues in the caption.

“And Happy Father’s Day to me, too,” Madonna writes alongside the image, “because, let’s face it, I’m the mommy and the daddy.”

The Queen of Pop added: “I don’t care what the papers say.”

Her message struck a chord with many women, with one writing: “To all of us single moms. Blessed beyond belief.”

Another added: “It takes a bad ass mum to be a dad too Madonna. Happy Father’s Day to all the badass mums out there.”

Madonna is not the only famous face to pay homage to single mums: earlier this year, Shameless star Emmy Rossum penned a powerful Facebook post about life as the child of a single mother.

“Father's Day still is difficult for me,” she said at the time. “I'm not really sure how to celebrate. In the weeks leading up to it, I sense it coming like a wave approaching. Sometimes I try to ignore it – but the ads in the paper or online banner ads for ‘Macy’s Fathers Day Cologne Sale!’ and restaurants selling ‘Father’s Day Brunch Mimosas!’ can make that pretty tricky.

“Sometimes, I take my mom to brunch and get her a present, to show her how much I value her. She really was both a mother and a father for me. I don't like her to know that it still causes me pain – 30 years later – lest she feel somehow that she wasn't enough.”

Rossum finished by writing: “She was always enough. She is enough. She wasn’t perfect, no one is, but for me she was the best mum ever.”
