Me and my muse: Louise Goldin & Sarah Mower

louisevideo_1_140910-1.jpg

Louise Goldin is renowned for her technical knowledge and for making bold, structured pieces that are still womanly and flattering. She’s worked with her muse – fashion journalist and British Fashion Council ambassador Sarah Mower – since the beginning of her career. Stylist interviewed and filmed them for our exclusive cover shoot.

Sarah, it’s your job to identify upcoming talent. What made Louise stand out?

Sarah: I meet designers before they even emerge from college. I saw Louise’s first show at Fashion East and remember thinking her level of expertise was incredible. Louise took the initiative, unlike many great designers, and asked if I wanted to go to lunch with her. She had a technique that was astonishing. Knitwear used to be just jumpers and she’s made it into fashion. I had never seen that anywhere before.

What advice did you give Louise?

Sarah: To go very slowly, to be a real perfectionist and to nurture the relationships you have with people.

Louise, how has Sarah’s experience and input helped you?

Louise: Sarah dramatically improved my chances because she’s so well respected. She reviewed a dress from my first NEWGEN collection on style.com and it was such an amazing moment.

Sarah, are you excited to see Louise’s new collection?

Sarah: Can’t wait. Thai futuristic, right?

Louise: Well I said futurism in Thailand but it’s really kind of more sports couture, it’s much more sporty. It’s red, white, flesh and black. And there are a lot of transparencies.

Are you lucky enough to get a sneak preview of her collections Sarah?

Sarah: Yes, I always try to barge my way into designer studios and ask them to show me.

Louise: I think it’s a luxury to have constructive criticism and I’ve always wanted it so I can improve.

With London Fashion Week just around the corner how much of your life is swallowed up by fashion right now?

Louise: Well I’m trying to balance it a bit more and actually have a weekend.

Sarah: It was like 99.9%... except you’ve got a boyfriend now who takes up a bit more of the percentage perhaps!
