The fierce personality trait that Mindy Kaling hopes to pass on to her baby

Oprah Winfrey recently let slip that her good pal Mindy Kaling is pregnant – and now, in an exclusive interview for NBC programme Sunday Today, the comedian has confirmed the news herself.

“I’m really, really excited about it,” she told Willie Geist.

“It’s so unknown to me. I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands,’ which is kind of a fun feeling.”

Kaling – who is also preparing for the sixth season of her hugely successful show, The Mindy Project, added that she will be taking inspiration from her late mother when it comes to parenting.

“My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” she said.

“My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I'd be so happy.”

Kaling previously revealed that, while she always intended to build a successful career first, she has always wanted children.

“I think I've decided that unlike everything else in my life, I'm going to be fast and loose about kids. I'm going to not actively plan, but if it happens, it would happen,” she said.

“I'm not cavalier about who I would have a kid with. But the thing I ask every parent that I really admire, the one comment they all have is that they wish they had kids earlier.”

But, while Kaling has long hoped to have a family of her own, she’s always been very clear on one thing: she absolutely doesn’t need a man in her life to do so.

“I don't need marriage,” Kaling told Good Housekeeping. “I don't need anyone to take care of all my needs and desires. I can take care of them myself now.

“When I was younger, I wanted so badly to be married and have kids in a rush,” she recalled. “I loved my parents' relationship. The way my father was with my mother when she was dying was so moving. It was such devotion. I don't know that that will happen for me, but I like it.”
