Watch Natalie Portman’s unborn baby dance in stunning music video

Natalie Portman is famed for starring in provocative, critically-acclaimed movies, such as Jackie, Black Swan, and V for Vendetta. However the actor decided to try her hand at something a little different for her latest project, which sees her take centre-stage in the music video for James Blake’s My Willing Heart.

Filmed just weeks before she gave birth to her and Benjamin Millepied’s second child together, the black-and-white footage focuses primarily on Portman’s experiences of pregnancy.

Incredibly, at around the 2:20 mark, you can actually see her unborn baby daughter kicking inside her belly – an unusual thing to witness at any time, let alone in a music video starring an Academy Award winner.

No wonder people are calling Amalia – who Portman and Millepied welcomed to the world on 22 February – the true star of My Willing Heart.

The video was created by Anna Rose Holmer with themes of “lovelorn romanticism” in mind. Opting for clear, crisp visuals, the critically-acclaimed director has her camera follow  Portman as she strokes her bare stomach, swims through a swimming pool, and spends time with her five-year-old son, Aleph.

According to a statement from Republic Records, “the visuals shift the emphasis of the track’s lyrics from lovelorn romanticism to maternal anticipation with subtle monochrome images, blended together with soft-focus textures.”

It is, of course, not the first time that a woman in the spotlight has chosen to dive underwater in a bid to celebrate her pregnancy.

We’re talking, of course, about the concept art that Beyoncé created to go alongside the announcement that she is pregnant with twins.

Beyonce's maternity shoot seemingly takes inspiration from Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus artwork.

Taking to her personal website, the singer published a handful of intimate photographs – some of which have been taken alongside her daughter, Blue Ivy, and others which have been snapped underwater.

Sharing a poem alongside the images, the singer referenced the Roman goddess Venus – and implied that motherhood helps women to transcend into a state of divinity.

“Venus has flooded me,” she wrote, “second planet from the sun. I wake up on her foamy shore.

“She wants to take me to meet my children. I’ve done this before… I’m still nervous.”

Unlike Beyoncé's photographs, which are elaborate, colourful and regal, Portman's black-and-white video is more thoughtful, quiet, and reflective.

Both women, however, look to water to signify life, fertility, and purity – and both have defied taboos to celebrate their pregnancy in a very public, and very beautiful, way.
