When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opted to set up home on the remote Welsh island of Anglesey, they may have been hoping for a quiet life.

However, their local landscape is set to become somewhat more lively if the nearby nudist community gets its way.

Naturists want to make Newborough beach in Anglesey - about a mile from the royal couple's home - an official nudist site.

The strip of coastline has attracted a number of nudists over the years and now the organisation British Naturism is seeking official status.

It claims the move will boost local tourism.

"It takes away the hassle factor because a lot of people see naturism as illegal," British Naturism commercial manager Andrew Welch told The Telegraph.

"Naturism isn't against the law, you can't legislate about what someone wears. If it were designated it would increase tourism in the area."

Local councillor Peter Rogers is opposed to the move. "It's not the nudists who are really the problem but the people who go and watch them from the trees," he said.

Kate and William live in a whitewash cottage in Anglesey, where William is based as a search and rescue helicopter pilot for the RAF.

They have been spotted out and about on the island on a number of occasions, but have been away recently, with William was deployed to the Falkland Islands and Kate on royal tour duties.
