Piers Morgan is finally quitting social media (and shutting up in general)

Social media without Piers Morgan is a dream worth dreaming. And it’s about to come true – temporarily at least.

A charity fundraising challenge, offering a day of the Good Morning Britain host’s digital silence in exchange for a £5,000 Comic Relief donation, has been met in full by Lord Alan Sugar.

For a whole 24 hours, social media will not echo with his online feuds, his thoughts on feminism, his views on sexual assault survivors, or any of his standard issue misogynistic waffle (not to mention his eagerness to remind everyone he’s a Close Personal Friend of Donald Trump).

In a video message, Sugar said: “It’s going to be a wonderful day without that nutter clogging up Twitter with his nonsense.”

Having agreed to “stop tweeting, writing, broadcasting and just generally running off at the mouth for 24 whole hours”, the next charity target is that Arsenal fan Morgan will wear the shirt of arch football rivals (and Sugar’s former team) Tottenham Hotspurs all day if £50,000 is raised by 8am Friday (24 March).

Many have already pledged thousands, including This Morning host Holly Willoughby, whom Morgan says promised £1,000, and former Spurs man Gary Lineker, who upped the shirt-wearing stakes to all day with his £2,000 donation.

Should you wish to contribute, JustGiving page Shut Up Piers can be found here.

Morgan silence and thousands for a good cause? Perhaps 2017 is looking up.
