Irish people make emotional journey #hometovote in equal marriage referendum

htv.png

In a heart-rending show of solidarity, hundreds of Irish expats are heading home to vote in today's same-sex marriage referendum.

A stipulation in Irish voting law prevents people from taking part unless they're in the country, but pro-equality voters haven't let that stop them, documenting their pilgrimage from across the world with the hashtag #hometovote.

Today could mark the first time a country has passed same-sex marriage legislation by popular vote, following months of campaigning. The government are pushing for a Yes vote for equal marriage, while the Catholic church and far right hope to secure No voters.

Young people have largely supported the Yes campaign, travelling from as far as Abu Dhabi and Bangkok in the past 24 hours to ensure their voices are heard.

Here's a handful of the #hometovote messages taking over Twitter: be warned, they're real tear-jerkers.
