Queen reveals woman's true age

When Rita Conway knocked five years off her age - she hadn't bargained on the Queen exposing her fib.

The Derbyshire great-grandmother had always told her family she was born in 1918, so earlier this month her daughter Hilary Backhouse was preparing for her mother's 95th birthday - until she got a shocking phonecall.

Backhouse, 68, was contacted by the Department for Work and Pensions because they wanted to know where they should send her mother's 100th birthday telegram from the Queen The Matlock Mercury reported.

Backhouse said:“We didn’t have a birth certificate for my mum, only a medical certificate which said her birthday was April 10, 1918. We don’t know if someone copied it out wrong but we always just assumed it was right.

“When we got the call, we were absolutely stunned. We thought this year was her 95th birthday.”

She said her mother had been "fibbing" about being 95 all along.

Rita now suffers from dementia but is “incredibly lively and cheerful” and celebrated her true age with her family earlier this month.

She said: "How old am I? I don't know, I'm not bothered. I feel alright but I don't know how old."
