Twenty-three years after splitting from former flame, Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert Downey Jr has revealed he'd like to reconnect with the Sex and the City star saying "I'll make a point of trying to see her while I'm here. I'd like to".

However, the actor conceded that he wouldn't get in contact with his ex-girlfriend unless he spoke to her husband actor Matthew Broderick beforehand.

Speaking on the Howard Stern radio show, SiriusXm, he said: "I'll ask his permission. I just want to check in for a few minutes. I love Matthew Broderick."

"First of all, I respect both of them so much," he added. "For any situation like this, I think enough time has to pass. You don't have to make a big deal of it when the time is right."

He also hinted of his heartbreak when him and Sarah broke up:

"I've never been the kind of person to acknowledge what's going on with me at the time, and I'd try to make light of it, but sure, when you're with someone for seven years, 18 to our mid-20s, it's kind of a big deal."

The former couple dated from 1984 until 1991 when they split as a result of the Iron Man star's drug and alcohol abuse problems. They met on set of the film Firstborn in 1984 and then stayed together for seven years.

Sarah later met Matthew Broderick, the star of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. They have been married for 17 years and have three children.

Robert first married fellow actor Deborah Falconer in 1992 but later divorced because of his various stints in and out of prison as a result of his drug addiction.

However, in 2003 the actor became clean of drugs and alcohol, and met his now wife Susan Levin, a film producer on the set of Gothika. They have one son, Exton, and have daughter due in November this year.
