Ryan Gosling has finally explained his reaction to the Oscars Best Picture blunder

This year’s infamous Oscars blunder has spawned a multitude of memes, not to mention a letter from the Academy Awards auditing firm Pricewaterhouse Cooper, publicly naming and shaming the culprit.

In case you were under a rock when it all unfolded, here’s a brief reminder: Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were charged with awarding the gong for Best Picture and announced La La Land as the winner. The cast and director made their way to the stage, but then there was a ruckus as it was revealed that they had read from the wrong envelope, and that Moonlight was the actual winner. To say the least, it was a very awkward moment in Oscars history.

The reactions of audience members were mixed, but the internet was fast to catch on that one Ryan Gosling could barely contain his giggles during the announcement.

But he’s now clarified he wasn’t cracking up at the host’s misfortune or hiding his disappointment with a decoy smile. In fact, it was relief we were seeing.

Speaking at the Adobe Summit in Las Vegas he explained: “What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt.

“I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head. ‘And then I just heard Moonlight won and I was so relieved that I started laughing.”

He added that he was "thrilled" to see the movie take the gong: “It’s such a groundbreaking film and an incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognised.”

So now we know. And to be fair, Gosling is a serial giggler…
