'You have someone that you want to be proud of you' Sienna Miller on how motherhood has helped boost her movie career

Sienna Miller's Hollywood career has flourished in the past few years, in a move she attributes to having a baby.

The 32-year-old actress says that becoming a mum to two-year-old Marlowe, her daughter with actor boyfriend Tom Sturridge, has forced casting agents and others involved in the movie industry to take her more seriously. She also says that it's helped her to crack that all-elusive "upper echelon" of high-profile film directors.

"People who read the negative things [about me], the people who need persuading, are probably ignorant enough to assume, 'Well she’s got a kid so she’s serious now,'" she tells the Guardian, in an interview out this week. "Which, of course, isn’t the case. I’m still whoever I was. Maybe more mature, but the same. So amongst that ignorant, ridiculous area of my industry, I’m sure opinions of me have changed because I’m a mother now."

"I think having a baby really changed everything, if I’m honest," she continues. "I think that’s where it began. The stakes are higher. You have someone that you want to be proud of you eventually. Motherhood also gave her a sense of time running out. You’re aware of your own mortality. For me, as soon as I had a baby I had a vision of my life – and what was left of it."

Sienna has roles lined up in a number of heavyweight, award-tipped films this year, including war drama American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood, gangster film Black Mass opposite Johnny Depp and wrestling biopic Foxcatcher.

This is a significant departure from the series of indie flicks and one blockbluster (2009's GI Joe) she appeared in during her 20s.

"It’s the first time I’ve been in some Serious Films of The Year," Sienna admits. "All the directors speak to each other. And once you crack that upper echelon of incredible directors, you’ve got people rooting for you. People who people listen to. I’ve never had that before."

Sienna hit the headlines throughout her 20s, in a time she looks back on as "quite chaotic". Her on-off relationship with Jude Law fell under intense press scrutiny, as did a high-profile affair with married American actor Balthazar Getty.

The actress was hot property throughout this period and found herself pursued remorselessly by paparazzi photographers, in behaviour she described as harassment during her testimony to the Leveson Inquiry into press misconduct.

Her appearance before the inquiry was far from easy. "I’d just found out I was pregnant,” she explains, of the day she appeared before the judge in 2011. "A walking hormone. Leveson knew, and I think they probably would’ve probed me a bit harder had they not known I’d been puking on the way there.

"It was such an intimidating room. It was clinical, and cold, and legal. I didn’t want to stumble, or say the wrong thing. It was such sensitive subject matter that I have such an emotional response to – and I didn’t want to be emotional."

But if Leveson was tough, her appearance as a witness during last year's hacking trial against Andy Coulson and Rebecca Brooks at the Old Bailey was much worse.

Sienna was one of a number of celebrities whose phone was hacked by News of the World reporters and her ex Jude, who also appeared as a witness during the trial, had warned her to avoid the trial.

"We spoke after Jude had done his [testimony] and he said: 'Do not do it. Get out of it.' And I couldn’t."

During her testimony via webcam, a voicemail was read out from Sienna to the actor Daniel Craig, which included the words "I love you" (the voicemail revealed her brief fling with the Bond actor).

"Somehow what came out of that was that I’d been having these affairs. Which was not the case," she says. "And suddenly Jude and I were on the cover of the newspaper again. And the timeline was all off. You know, it was just horrible to be back there.

"It was handled really badly. They wheeled people out for the show. And I got thrown under the bus a bit. It reminded people of things I didn’t want to remind them of."
