The return of girl power: a Spice Girls reunion is happening

We can’t think of any music news that would excite us more: the Spice Girls are back.

That’s right, you really just read that. Get ready to spice up your life, because the band have been recording their first new music in 16 years.

Geri Horner, Melanie Brown and Emma Bunton have been in London’s Play Deep studios for the last two days recording brand new material.

The trio hope to release a whole new album later this year, in celebration of the band’s twenty-year anniversary – this year will mark two decades since the release of their debut single, Wannabe.

Additionally, the girls will also be touring in the UK and the US in 2017.

The news that the three have been working together was confirmed by Mel B on Instagram, who posted a photo of the three women, with the caption: "And I say oohhhh LALA".

Scary Spice tells The Mirror:

“If we do anything, we will be writing everything from scratch. We are all group texting and speak a lot.”

The paper also reports that fashion designer and slickest Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, will not be joining the others for the reunion, as she is busy with her “forthcoming Estee Lauder collection.”

There is no word yet from Melanie Chisholm, but it is believed she is focussing on her solo career.

The original five some rocketed to fame in 1996 and celebrated third wave feminism and girl power, inspiring hordes of young fans. Wannabe topped the charts in 37 countries and their debut album, Spice, sold 31 million copies worldwide, making them the bestselling girl band in history.

When Geri announced she was leaving in 1998, the sound of tiny teenage hearts breaking could be heard worldwide.

Since, each band member has attempted their own solo career, but nothing has quite compared to the music they created when they were together. The group reunited in 2007 and in 2012 for an iconic performance at the 2012 London Olympics.

The group’s old producer, Eliot Kennedy sent out a tweet this week, saying:

With the rise of fourth wave feminism, it was only a matter of time before girl power returned – and we’re more than ready for that zig-a-zig-ah.
