Student gymnast’s stunning hip hop routine goes viral

An American student has wowed the internet with her breathtakingly powerful gymnastic routine.

Sophia DeJesus, 21, a sociology student at the University of California, Los Angeles, performed her routine to a hip hop soundtrack during a university competition, and the result has now been viewed almost four million times on YouTube.

The impressive routine stepped away from the usual classical or gymnastic styles, turning instead to hip hop dances moves including 'the whip/nae nae' and 'hitting the quan'. In the video, DeJesus injects these moves in-between high kicks, flips and perfectly executed somersaults, while her team mates watched from the side-lines, dancing along.

DeJesus completes a flawless tumbling routine, as her cobalt blue ombre ponytail whips around after her. At one point, the gymnast leaps into the air and lands in the splits- a move which would make most viewers wince, but that she pulls off with aplomb.

The routine ends with DeJesus saluting the crowd, who give her a standing ovation, and hold up signs for a score of 10.

Although not the score the spectators were hoping for, judges awarded DeJesus a 9.925 for her routine – which is a personal best for the student, and meant that her team – which currently ranks No. 5 in the country - made it into first place for the competition against Utah.

According to The New York Times, DeJesus says that she wanted to end her senior year with a “bang”, but had “no clue” her routine would get so much attention.

“I love dancing and I love performing. That was the main goal – to go out and hit a good one for my team,” she tells Pac-12 Sports

The gymnast says she learned the moves during a dance class in San Diego last summer:

“I watched it and asked him [the teacher] ‘Can I put some of these moves in a floor routine?' and he was like, 'Yeah, for sure.’”

Then, over Christmas, DeJesus’ sister helped her with the choreography:

“She helped me come up with more choreography and blended it in, and it was amazing and I was so thankful for her,” she says.

Unsurprisingly, it turns out DeJesus has a dance backround – having appeared on popular TV show Hip Hop Harry at age 12.

Take a look at her full routine, below, and see if you can resist shouting ‘Yas queen!’ all through the entire thing…
