Stylist 16: Cherry Healey

cherry-healy.jpg

We feel like we already know quite a bit about TV presenter Cherry Healey. It's probably got something to do with the fact that we've watched her bravely document her own life in Cherry Has a Baby, Cherry Goes Dating and Cherry Gets Married, not to mention she also stripped off for her insightful Body Image programme.

So, while we already know her better than some of our mates, we wanted to know what's in her handbag, whether she hides and why she feels sedan chairs should be government issued. Yes, really.

1. When was the last time you hid?

I’m practised at hiding because I’m terrible with people’s names. I’m always having to dive into shops and my husband has to help me out with names. I definitely hide at least once a week.

2. What's in your handbag?

Batman action figure, iPhone, headphones, a collection of rings and hairpins, some almonds, pink hair clip and a really long to do list. I write it on post-it note pad and have tick boxes next to each item. I also write down jobs I’ve done that weren’t on the list so I can cross them off and refer back to them.

3. Do you have any tattoos, if so what?

I have one tattoo that I got last year. The tattoo is of my daughter’s birthday under my left boob because that's the most private un-showy off part. When my son is born, I think I'll get his name underneath too.

4. Sedan chair: good idea or a bad idea?

They should be government issued if you are nine months pregnant, but then again no one would want to carry that so it should have wheels on. Although then I realise that’s a car…

So, yes but no.

5. What are you most ashamed of?

Hiding from people when I forget their names.

6. Is the world getting better, or worse?

It’s both. Technology is more advanced and we are more connected and aware than ever before, which is great, but it makes the hunger and suffering of others less acceptable.

7. Cheese or chocolate?

Chocolate cheesecake. I really like baked American cheesecake. I get the kids to help by mashing up the biscuits and it comes with Maltesers on top. It’s a really great pudding to make.

8. What was your finest hour?

I kind of want to say the birth of my daughter, but probably when I got my first job as a researcher at the BBC. I did so many 15 hour days. I held a door open for two hours for a children’s show called Exchange. Those type of jobs really sort out the people who only want to work in TV for the glamour and those who do it for real.

9. What does feminism mean to you?

Equality. Not being the same as men but being equal in voice. I think it’s a much more subtle battle with sexism. It’s not as obvious as it used to be, but it’s by no means a done deal.

10. Which part of your home do you like best?

We just bought a massive dark wooden bed, which I love. My daughter gets into bed with us in the mornings and it’s where my husband and I chat at the end of the day. We all snuggle up in bed at the weekends and watch movies together.

11. What's guaranteed to make you cry?

Anything to do with children being neglected.

12. What do you dream about at night?

My daughter falling into a swimming pool and attacked by a squid and my husband saving her. I remember loving him so much after that dream. He really lucked out, even though he'd actually done nothing.

13. Complete the sentence: Britain needs more...

Street parties. We had an amazing street party for the jubilee. A DJ neighbour of ours - DJ Derek - was playing so we had everyone out on the street dancing. We blocked off the street and all the kids were running about, it had an amazing 1950s vibe.

14. Are you a lover or a fighter?

Definitely a lover. But I’ve got fight in me when it comes to it – if someone pushes me too hard

15. Have you left the gas on?

No. But I did leave the freezer open all night.

16. What question would you like to ask Stylist readers?

What documentaries would you like to see more of on telly?

Cherry's new series Old Before My Time starts tonight at 9pm on BBC3
