Stylist 16: Rachelle Lefevre

Twilight actress Rachelle Lefevre is coming to our TV screens this summer, as a fearless reporter in sci-fi drama Under The Dome - based on the novel by Stephen King and co-produced by Steven Spielberg.

Here she speaks to Stylist about her love of British style and Cadbury Creme Eggs, why she can't resist an In-N-Out burger and her concern over the restriction of women's reproductive rights in the States.

Rachelle Lefevre stars in Under the Dome, starting exclusively on Channel 5 on Monday 19 August at 10pm

1. When was the last time you hid?

I had a van picking me up to go to work and I didn’t want them to see me, because I was running late and they would make me get in. I took my dog out to pee at the back of the house instead of the front, to hide from my work van. It's not an interesting answer but it's a true one.

2. What’s in your handbag?

Oh my God, everything you could possibly need. I’ve got lip salve in a pot, Big Red chewing gum – because I don’t like mint gum, I like cinnamon. Hair elastics, some almonds and cashew nuts in case I need snacks, tons of loose change at the bottom and matches, because I light candles.

3. Do you have any tattoos, if so what?

I do! I have a tattoo on the inside of my left wrist that says "Invictus”. It’s Latin and it’s the title of my favourite poem by William Ernest Henley. It’s a sort of a note to self, a memo.

4. Sedan chair: good idea or a bad idea?

They’re a terrible idea. Everyone should walk. One of my favourite sayings is, "At the end of the game, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.”

''British women look like they got dressed in the dark but it’s perfect''

5. What are you most ashamed of?

I try to eat organic as much as possible and I talk about eating organic a lot of the time but I’m such a junkie for an In-N-Out burger. Sometimes I’ll literally go for an In-N-Out burger the same day that I’ve tweeted encouraging people to eat organic. And you think, “Well, there goes that…”

6. Is the world getting better, or worse?

It’s hard to say. I want to believe it’s getting better but I’m a little discouraged. I’d have to say worse at the moment. There are a lot of laws being passed in the US that massively restrict women’s reproductive rights. Sometimes they [individual US states] are successful in restricting a woman’s right to abortion altogether and when they can’t ban abortion, they succeed in passing laws that restrict clinics. So even if you’re even legally allowed to get an abortion, there’s nowhere to get one. They restrict utilities and also access to birth control. There are all kinds of things they’re doing.

7. Cheese or chocolate?

Chocolate. There’s nothing about me where the answer wouldn’t be chocolate. I’m obsessed with Cadbury’s Creme Eggs, I wait all year for those.

8. What was your finest hour?

My sister called me the other day, she’s 16. She called to talk to me about 16-year-old issues, which could have made me freak out. But I think I was really good with her and I was proud of myself. I think I was a good big sister.

''I don’t believe in acknowledging that both sexes are the same '''

9. What does feminism means to you?

I don’t believe in acknowledging that both sexes are the same. Equality is about exercising our differences. Feminism means equality and equality means that women have control over choices that pertain to them specifically, and that are unique to them. And likewise for men.

10. Which part of your home do you like best?

The wallpaper in my bedroom. It has trees with all these surrealist little golden pears in. It’s kind of weird but I love it. It’s the first thing I fixed for the house and it’s my favourite.

11. What’s guaranteed to make you cry?

Anything involving animals, like an infomercial on animal rights.

12. What do you dream about at night?

I have the weirdest dreams, it’s like I’ve taken psychotropic drugs before I fall asleep. I have the sort of dreams where everything that happens in your day is still kicking around in your head. And your dream puts it all together in this weird space that makes no sense.

13. Complete the sentence: Britain needs more…

Low-cost rent.

14. Are you a lover or a fighter?

I’m a lover, but I’m still a redhead. You can write, ‘Lover but she has a temper.’

15. Have you left the gas on?

No.

16. What question would you like to ask Stylist readers?

I’m obsessed with British style. I want to know how British women look accidentally gorgeous. They look like they got dressed in the dark but it’s perfect. I want to know, how do they do that – what’s their secret?
