The Spice Girls “adore each other” and are still keen to reunite this summer, says Emma Bunton


Emma Bunton has added fuel to the ongoing will-they-won’t-they Spice Girls reunion saga, by revealing that all five members of the original group are eager to mark the 20th anniversary of Wannabe this summer.

Anticipation among fans has been at fever pitch ever since Bunton, Geri Horner and Mel B styled themselves as girl group GEM (the initials of their first names), and a flavour of their new pop ensemble’s sound was leaked onto the internet late last year.

Neither Melanie Chisholm nor Victoria Beckham were involved in the project, which was then thrown into doubt after one-time Ginger Spice decided to quit and focus on family priorities when she became a mum for the second time at the beginning of this year.

However, all is not lost – as 41-year-old Bunton hinted in her latest interview.

“We adore each other,” Bunton tells the Telegraph this week. “There’s so much we’ve been through. I would love to do something [to mark the anniversary].

“I think we’d all quite like to do something, but it really is figuring it out. We all have such different lives. Mel B lives in America. We’ve all got different managers.”

Bunton also waxed lyrical about her friendship with Beckham, and insisted the pair were close – despite the tangents their respective careers have taken since the group split up, and former Posh Spice transformed into an internationally-renowned fashion designer.

“When a friend does that well it’s incredible,” says Bunton. “She’s just hilarious and I know exactly what she’s thinking just by looking at her.

“I see pictures and I go, ‘I know what she’s thinking about!’ I’m very lucky because I know the fun, sarcastic, brilliant other side to her as well.”

The launch of the Spice Girls offshoot band GEM was announced via a video message from yesteryear’s Scary, Baby and Ginger Spice last July.

“We’ve had our ups and downs but you have always been there. We want to celebrate and have a party, and when we do, you’re invited,” the trio told fans.

Despite not being part of the reunion, Victoria gave her blessing to her former band mates.

“Of course, as a new group, I do [wish them luck],” she said. “I do think they should sing new material, though, because what we did as the Spice Girls was so special. If they sang Spice Girls songs, I think I might be a bit sad.”

The release of GEM’s tune, Song For Her sparked a fresh level of excitement among Spice Girl aficionados. But Emma downplayed the move, saying, “You know, us girls love creating stuff. We went and had a laugh in the studio. It's not a single, it's just we were creating."

The prospect of a reunion is now uncertain, but it’s good to know that – given Bunton’s latest comments – it’s not entirely off the books.

The Spice Girls last reunited in full for a performance during the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

Responding to the idea of a one-off gig at Wembley Stadium this summer, Bunton says: “Fingers crossed. That’s something we’d really love to do.” 

Bunton, who has two sons with her long-term partner Jade Jones, also revealed that motherhood had changed her.

“I used to be very self-absorbed, I’m sure, worrying about what I was going to wear to the next event or whether my roots were done,” she says. “I’ve changed as a person.”
