Couple call it quits after five years of marriage

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce after five years of marriage, it emerged today (28 June).

The news was confirmed by Katie's lawyer, Jonathan Wolfe, who told People magazine: "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family.

"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

The couple married in an Italian castle in 2006, following a whirlwind romance that both shocked and delighted showbiz commentators and saw Mission Impossible star Tom jump up and down on Oprah's sofa shouting, "I'm in love".

At one point "TomKat" were famed for their pronounced public displays of affection on the red carpet, but they never managed to fully shake off speculation that stemmed from their relationship's unlikely roots.

They dated for just two months before Tom popped the question and Katie, 16 years his junior, had photos of him on her wall growing up - long before she actually met him.

Katie, best known for her coming-of-age role in Dawson's Creek, is currently in New York with their six-year-old daughter, Suri. Tom, who was previously married to Nicole Kidman, is promoting his new movie Rock Of Ages and has not been pictured together with his wife since February.
