Victoria’s Secret model Jasmine Tookes praised for ‘real’ stretch marks shot

Victoria’s Secret has had its fair share of Photoshop drama in the past—wonky hip-to-waist ratios, missing limbs, questionably shaped buttocks—but the lingerie brand and star model Jasmine Tookes have just made headlines for something rather unprecedented.

Keeping it real.

In new promotional shots released by the brand, gorgeous Tookes is seen posing in the 2016 Fantasy Bra (diamond encrusted underwear worth an eye watering £2.5 million), with—can you believe it—her stretch marks on show.

Though there’s been no word from the brand or Tookes on whether or not the shots, which almost certainly break (albeit softly) from VS tradition, were intended to spark a public discussion on positive body image, they have nonetheless.

Heaping praise on the model, who this year will become the first black woman to model the Fantasy Bra (a huge honour among Angels) in nearly a decade, social media users have celebrated the ‘raw’ and ‘real’ shot.

Pouring out support on Twitter, one young woman writes: “The fact that even Victoria’s Secret models have stretch marks makes me feel so much more confident with my stretch marks and my body.”

Another notes: “When you can look at pics of a model and say 'her stretch marks are just like mine'. Love the way VS is changing the game with Jasmine Tookes.”

Tookes was revealed as the Fantasy Bra ‘chosen one’ earlier this week, in a video clip on social media of her accepting the seemingly surprise offer from VS bosses.

The model will don the 18ct Bright Night Fantasy Bra, which is said to contain 9,000 precious stones, at the filming of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Paris this week, due to be aired next month.

“I had no idea that I was going to be chosen to wear the Bright Night Fantasy Bra,” she told the Daily Mail. “I don't know how they chose, but I am so honored to have this opportunity, and be able to walk down the runway with this beautiful thing.”

Tookes follows in the footsteps of Tyra Banks, Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum, Karolina Kurkova, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and Alessandra Ambrosio, who have all enjoyed the spotlight as a Fantasy Bra honouree.

Words can not express my excitement for this day. I have been waiting 5 months to share this amazing news with you! As a little girl every year I would sit and watch the vsfs and would always say to myself and my family one day I will be up there. I worked my ass off to be able to accomplish that goal and that dream came true 5 years ago. Never in a million years did I imagine myself wearing a 3 million dollar fantasy bra. It blows my mind that I am joining a list of women(Tyra, Gisele & Heidi) who I have looked up to my whole life and it is truly an honor to follow in their footsteps. It is also a milestone for Victoria's Secret to have a woman of color wearing the bra this year because there have only been two in the past & I am so happy to represent that for the brand and women out there. I hope that I can be as much of an inspiration to young girls as these girls were for me. Every time I see this video I begin to cry... this truly means the world to me and it is proof that with hard work, dedication & a positive attitude that you can accomplish anything you want in your life. @ed_razek I don't know how many more times I can thank you but I'm going to be saying it again and again for a very long time☺️ THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.. You have made my childhood dreams come true over and over again. I still pinch myself everyday!!!! The day this was announced you really got me 🙈 I was so overwhelmed with emotion and love from my whole VS family. I love you all so much!!! Also, a huge thank you to all my girls and @imgmodels @sbermood For being the most supportive and loving people out there. I couldn't do this without you all!! Thanks again to @ed_razek, Monica Mitro & everyone at Victoria's Secret for giving me your constant support!!!!
