Pills, tears and violence: watch Brad and Angelina on screen together for the first time in 10 years

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Pitt have just released the trailer for their much-anticipated joint project By the Sea - and it looks like their first film together in a decade is a far cry from Mr & Mrs Smith.

In the emotional clip, which you can watch below, the couple lay bare the painfully fractured marriage of their characters, Roland and Vanessa, with lingering shots and tense exchanges, which at one point spills over into violence.

Jolie Pitt revealed recently that they'd drawn on their own experiences to lend a reality to the “heavy” scenes, which were filmed in Malta last year. While on their actual honeymoon, no less, which must rank as one of the least fun ways to celebrate tying the knot we've come across.

“I'd be directing myself and him in a scene where we're having a fight, and I'd be pulling out the parts that have an aggression toward me or when you're frustrated with each other - it was very heavy,” she said.

“We kept joking that all of the crew felt like they were living in a house where the parents were fighting and you don't know where to stand or where to look.” Awkward.

The actress, 40, also wrote and directed the film, which follows a couple on holiday in France in the 70's who have to confront their dysfunctional relationship when they meet some newlyweds staying at their seaside inn.

The trailer follows up this laugh-a-minute premise with uncomfortable scenes that hear Pitt's voiceover asking, “Are we ever gonna talk about it? Vanessa? Do you hate me?” as well as plenty of cinematically beautiful crying and despair.

Jolie Pitt told Stylist ahead of the film, slated for release in November, “We haven’t worked together for 10 years so it’s going to be interesting,” and has previously revealed  “a few friends asked if we were crazy” for undertaking the project so soon after they married.

But the star explained the film was a departure for her: “We're proud of ourselves for being brave enough to try it [...] I think By the Sea was the hardest film for me because it wasn't [issue-driven]. It's something I probably won't do very much of.”

It's fair to say the result doesn't have quite the same lighthearted nature of 2005's Mr & Mrs Smith, but with these two at the helm it's bound to light up the eyes of awards panels the world over.

Watch the trailer below and let us know what you think.
