Watch Lady Gaga's pitch-perfect Sound of Music tribute at the 2015 Oscars

Fifty years after a singing former nun led the von Trapp family merrily romping through the hills of Austria in The Sound of Music, a modern doyenne of the music industry created a homage to this timeless children's classic at the 2015 Oscars.

Lady Gaga held an audience of A-Listers spellbound with her medley performance of hit tunes from the film, in a voice that was eerily reminiscent of Julie Andrews' dulcet tones in the original musical.

Gaga, 28, spent six months preparing for the tribute, to mark The Sound of Music's 50th anniversary.

And her hard work paid off; she hit the high notes every time in a flawless rendition of four tracks from the beloved 1965 movie; The Sound of MusicMy Favorite ThingsEdelweiss and Climb Ev'ry Mountain.

The Grammy award-winning singer garnered a rapturous response for her spine-chilling rendition, not least from Dame Julie Andrews herself, who appeared on stage as a surprise at the end of the performance to hug Gaga and congratulate the artist.

The legendary Oscar-winning star, 79, said she was "especially touched by Lady Gaga’s wonderful performance".

"I have always been a fan, but last night we bonded and now I have a new friend," Andrews said afterwards, in the kind of warm endorsement that is unusual in today's hardened world of critics and competitors.

Appearing on the red carpet earlier on, Gaga revealed that she had invested a lot in the performance. "I really put my heart into preparing it, and I'm really excited to entertain the nominees tonight," she said.

It was unknown what exactly Gaga would be performing at the Academy Awards beforehand, although she let hint with a tweet that read: "Backstage getting ready for my performance! Tonight my heart will be blessed...with the sound of...."

Scarlett Johansson introduced the enchanting segment, and TV host Ellen DeGeneres was among its fans, later tweeting: "@LadyGaga made me want to climb a mountain. She also made me want to ford every stream and I don't even know what that means. #Oscars2015"

Gaga's nostalgic performance also earned her rave critical reviews, with commentators hailing the pared-down tribute as a career-defining moment for the Paparazzi singer.

The Sound of Music swept the board at the 1966 Oscars, winning five awards including Best Picture and Best Music.
