"We are like the naughty children" Poppy Delevingne on the secrets to friendship with Alexa Chung

Poppy Delevingne has written an "essay on friendship" in Net-a-Porter's weekly online magazine The Edit, discussing her long-standing friendship with all round it-girl Alexa Chung.

Cara Delevingne's big sister, 28, tells the story of her friendship with Alexa, or Chung, as she affectionately refers to her. The pair first met on a model casting where Alexa "was wearing skinny jeans that I wanted/needed in my life immediately – a feeling I had no idea would resonate every time I saw her."

"But for me, the real turning point was when we went moonlit skinny-dipping in the sea at Cannes. It was spectacular. At 4am, rummaging through bushes for our stray couture, I realized it wasn’t just another friendship."

Poppy continued on her modelling career, while Alexa became a TV presenter, but they have stayed close for the past ten years. The glamourous pair take a roadtrip through Ibiza on The Edit's shoot, where they model a cowboy-chic wardrobe of designer clothes, and reveal insights into their impossibly luxurious lives.

Poppy, who recently married James Cook, writes "I love living vicariously through tales of her love life. That was one of the reasons for inviting her on this trip – we’re boy-crazy. James knows I’m boy-crazy and always will be, but Alexa is really boy-crazy. What else? She scoffs pasta for breakfast, sunbathes topless and is brilliant with people – in short, the perfect vacation companion."

She says she feels like an "older sister" to Alexa, "despite the fact she has two years on me." and touches on her relationship with her real-life sister, model of the moment Cara Delevingne:

"Having Cara as my baby, I had to learn quite quickly that I couldn’t be competitive because I had a sister who meant more to me. And I knew she was going to be brilliant, so I had to become very aware of not comparing."

Poppy opens up on the secret to having a close friendship like hers and Alexa's, saying "We’re very supportive of each other: I’m always so interested in what she’s doing. I don’t understand women who don’t encourage each other; I don’t understand that green-eyed monster. You get so much more out of life by being supportive and having loving friends who are there for you. Good friendship can make your heart light; it can make you feel giddy; it can make you feel like when you fall in love."

And she talks about keeping a long-distance friendship going "In between times [seeing each other], an email never goes amiss. I’ll send little random things: the last one was a message that said ‘I love you’ in Dinosaur (‘Rawrrrr’ for those who don’t speak Dino)."
