Woman takes herself on “self date” after being stood up on Tinder

Tinder can be a dark place. There’s the gross chat-up lines (if you don’t believe us, check out Tinder Nightmares). There’s the ennui that comes from spending too long mindlessly swiping left. And then there are the times that you do actually organise a date with someone who seems reasonably interesting, pleasant and sane – no mean feat, by any account – and then they cancel at the last minute.

That’s what happened recently to 31-year-old Laura Bull, from Queensland, Australia. As she was getting ready to head out for a first date with a man she’d met on Tinder, he called to say that he wouldn’t be able to make it.

Considering that it was the third time that Bull had been stood up, lesser women than she might have hung up the phone, got out the makeup wipes and flopped onto the sofa to watch re-runs of Friends. But that’s not how they do things in Queensland.

Instead, the mother-of-two put on some lipstick and took herself on a “self date”.

Laura Bull kicked off her self date with a post to her Facebook page

“He called last minute to say he was sick, and he could have been, but I am a little sceptical about the whole thing,” Bull told Daily Mail Australia. “This is the third time I have had a date cancel last minute – one didn’t even let me know – but instead of letting it upset me I got dressed up and took myself out.”

Bull posted photos from her day out on Facebook, filling in her friends on what she was doing and why. And by anyone's standards, the woman knows how to execute a good date. Check out some of the highlights from her day: lounging in the park! Lying on the beach! Watching the sunset!

At the end of the day, Bull took herself to a restaurant for a beer and a burger. Here, she hit her first hitch: the dreaded judgmental look from the waitress when she asked for a table for one. But she handled it with style, of course.

“I’ve never taken myself out for dinner before but it was so beautiful watching everyone down below and I’m so glad I stayed,” Bull told Daily Mail Australia. “I haven’t done the single thing for a while and even though I had dates cancelled three times I absolutely owned my self-date.

“And when it comes to dating again, I think I will stick to meeting people the old-fashioned way for now.”

She added that she hopes her story will inspire other single mothers to take time out for themselves – regardless of whether they have a romantic partner to accompany them.

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with you time,” she said. “I had such a wonderful day and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
