Woman marries the Waterstones man after tweeting her love for him

If you thought that the digital age was removing any real communication from life and limiting our ability to connect with people . . . think again.

A couple who met on Twitter have married, and their nuptials have been trending on the social networking site.

Londoners, Victoria and Jonathan O’Brien, met in 2012 when Victoria was amused and inspired by the Waterstones Oxford Street Twitter account, and tweeted:

But Victoria received no response (it seems Waterstones was playing hard to get). Relaying the story to a friend, they made a bet on whether she’d be able to win a date with the man behind the account within a week.

Although Victoria missed the deadline, a lucky typo in one of her tweets attracted Jonathan’s attention (ever punctilious, as social media managers are), and he got in touch.

“It took a couple of months – Jonathan ignored my first tweet but the second had a typo and he picked up on that,” says Victoria.

The pair had been dating for two and a half years when Jonathan proposed. The couple married at Islington Town Hall and had their reception at the Londesborough pub in Stoke Newington.

On 17 July the Twittesphere exploded when Victoria tweeted a screenshot of her original tweet to Jonathan, alongside a ‘just married’ image, and added the famous Jane Eyre line: “Reader, I married him.”

The tweet has since been shared and liked by over 30,000 people.

The pair say they can’t believe the response people have had, saying it is “crazy” and “overwhelming,” with Jonathan saying:

“It’s been very odd being on the other side of the story. It’s weird being the one who’s going viral.

“A lot of people have got in touch, saying they’re dead happy for us and that it’s nice to see a lovely story. It seems to have snowballed a bit.”

Jonathan now works at Innocent Smoothies, but he is taken, ladies, so watch what you tweet. The good news, though, is that the new Waterstones social manager is single and ready to mingle...
