A woman who was helped by a homeless man when she was stranded in London has raised more than £11,000 for the kind-hearted stranger.

Nicole Sedgebeer's story of "the most eye opening event of my life" went viral earlier this month after the 21-year-old recounted her experience in a candid Facebook post.

She had missed her last train home from Euston station to Milton Keynes after going out with friends and was about to burst into "drunken tears" when she was offered help by the man, known only as Mark.

I hope this story makes people look twice when they see a homeless person. Last night I missed my last train home and...

Nicole admitted that she would normally have avoided eye contact with a homeless person but Mark helped her to an all-night cafe as it "was too dangerous to walk by myself" and stayed with her until he had to leave to collect a sleeping bag, promising he would return at 5am to make sure she caught her train.

She admits that "being a typical human being I didn't believe he would come back." In fact, Mark did keep his promise - and even had to take a bus to get back to the station.

Homeless man helps stranded woman

When Nicole Sedgebeer missed her last train home from Euston, she was left on the verge of tears, with nowhere to go and no battery left on her phone. That was until Mark Collins stepped in. He's homeless and had seen her distress and decided to help. He took her to a 24-hour-cafe, then picked her up the next morning to escort her back to the station. She hasn't seen him since.See what happened when we reunited them live on television.

Touched by Mark's caring actions, she set up a crowdfunding JustGiving page to raise money for him and other local homeless people.

She says on the page:

"Mark embodies the best of humanity. He went out of his way to help me, a complete stranger, when the reality of his situation is that people walk past him every day without offering him help. Mark you are one special man, I will never look down on a homeless person again and so want to do something to help Mark and all the other homeless people around Euston."

In under two weeks Nicole has surpassed her target of £8,000 and will continue fundraising for a further three weeks. Donate on the JustGiving page.
