Behind the scenes of Adele's Carpool Karaoke: “She’s as wonderful as you would hope she would be”

With more than 41 million views on YouTube, it's likely the instantly legendary Carpool Karaoke clip featuring the one and only Adele is already on your radar (and if it's not, quick, here's the link).

Now the executive producer of The Late Late Show with James Corden, Ben Winston, has spoken to vulture.com about what it was really like to film a car singalong on a rainy Monday in London with one of the most successful singers on the planet.

The segment, one that's seen a series of A-list talents line up to croon with Corden as he drives around, saw the pair take on Adele's own hits, the Spice Girls and Nicki Minaj.

As well as confirming that Corden, 37, actually does drive the car (albeit it in a slow-moving convoy of cars full of production crew), Winston addressed whether the Brit host had any misgivings over attempting to stay in tune alongside the superstar – specifically, concerning not singing too loudly over one of the most critically acclaimed voices of our times. No pressure.

The pair clearly had a blast filming the segment

“That’s such a good question,” he told the website. “There’s something so precious about Adele’s voice, you don’t want to ruin the moment of Adele singing it. So, yes, he did think about that. And I think it’s just right.

“There are moments where he doesn’t join in, and there are moments where he does. It just adds to the joy. When he’s not singing, he’s admiring this genius gift. In the end, it was like watching two old friends have a blast.”

Discussing 27-year-old Adele's status as everyone's favourite ‘girl next door’, Winston also confirms that she is indeed as nice as she appears. Which is, well, nice.

He said: “She’s a remarkable woman. She is the biggest star, I would say, in the world right now. But yet she’s the most down-to-earth, lovely girl you could meet […]

“You sometimes wonder if success will change someone, but it wasn’t with her. She’s as wonderful as you would hope she would be.”

The executive producer of The Late Late Show said Adele filmed for two hours

The segment has become a huge draw for big names, having previously entertained Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber, and Winston says now guests line up to be involved.

“[The popularity] wasn’t really until we did Stevie Wonder. He was just promoting his tour, and not an album. But then, within 48 hours after he did Carpool, an album he had released in 2002, greatest hits, went to No. 1 in the UK and Europe. And it went up in the US too […]

“The labels and the artists all sat up after that. Suddenly, it wasn’t such a long shot to be asking your Rod Stewarts and your Elton Johns and your Coldplays. That was probably a turning point for us.”

Elton John is set to join the former Gavin and Stacey star for a special show during the annual Super Bowl NFL game in February, although it's hard to imagine anyone topping the fuss around Adele's, even Sir Elton himself.
