Zooey Deschanel reveals quaint name for her baby daughter

She gave birth three months ago, but comedy actor Zooey Deschanel has only just revealed her baby daughter's name - and it's an unusual one.

The 35-year-old and her husband Jacob Pechenik have chosen to revive a charming old-fashioned moniker, naming their first child Elsie.

But that's not all. Of course there had to be more from the queen of kookiness. The baby's middle name is Otter. Yes, Otter as in the animal.

Deschanel confirmed the news last night at the premiere of Rock the Kasbah in New York.

“It’s Elsie…” the New Girl star said, while her husband added, “Otter.” “Like the animal,” Zooey explained, with film producer Jacob adding, “Sea otter.”

Deschanel and Pechenik announced their marriage and birth of their daughter in Texas in August.

They're the latest celebrities to give their children retro names from a bygone era. Lily Allen named her daughters Ethel and Marnie, Bruce Willis called his daughter Mabel, Dido named her son Stanley and Amy Poehler named her son Archie.

And they're not the first parents to land their kids with an eyebrow-raising middle name, but "Otter" does put little Elsie in good company. These stars did just fine with their unusual middle names:

  • Kate Hudson: Garry
  • Ciara: Princess
  • Uma Thurman: Karuna
  • Adele: Blue
  • Tina Fey: Stamatina
