Zosia Mamet explains why it was so important to keep her wedding a secret

We all know that wedding planning can get stressful, especially when trying to please friends and family. And for those in the public eye, it’s hard to imagine the pressure that must be felt following an engagement announcement.

So it’s refreshing to hear Zosia Mamet’s explanation for getting married in secret, and why she chose to keep her engagement news private beyond a small circle of friends and family.

The Girls star appeared on The Late Show ahead of the finale of the show’s sixth season and the topic of her nuptials (which took place in October 2016) came up when host Stephen Colbert commented on her wedding ring.

She revealed that she was in fact engaged last time she appeared on the show.

"I was secretly engaged,” she told the host.

After joking that, of course, it wasn’t a secret from her now husband Evan Jonigkeit, she explained: “We just wanted it to be our thing. Our families knew."

The 29-year-old also told the host that the privacy made it more special. She then revealed that, after her last appearance on the chat show, she went straight to choose her wedding dress – an unconventional black Givenchy dress.

"I went directly from our taping to the place I got my wedding dress, and I bought my wedding dress that night," she told Jonigkeit.

After her wedding, Mamet has been happy to share details of the day, and even had a photoshoot in Vogue. But it’s clear that, in terms of planning, at least, she wanted to keep things well and truly on her own terms.

Mamet met her husband while working on off-Broadway play Really Really in 2013, in which they played an engaged couple. “I suppose it’s life imitating art,” she told Vogue at the time.

They had around 100 guests at their wedding in Cedar Lakes Estates – mostly family and their dog Moose. The rustic ceremony and reception saw guests crowd round campfires, and featured quirky details including an aura photographer and personalised transfer tattoos of the pair’s initials.
