Veiled women denied bus boarding

New Zealand drivers cause controversy

Two bus drivers in Auckland, New Zealand, who refused to allow women wearing face veils on their buses will be fired if they do it again.

In one incident, a Saudi Arabian student was left in tears on the street when a NZ Bus driver shouted “Out!” and drove off. Their defence? A phobia of masks. NZ Bus general manager, Jon Calder said: “Both drivers… claim it’s not religious... they genuinely have a phobia of people wearing masks, hence why we haven’t dismissed them.” Prime Minister John Key said he has no plans to ban burkas, that Muslim women wearing veils shouldn’t face discrimination in New Zealand’s “inclusive society” and that people’s cultural beliefs should be respected.
