Both men and women in northern India are being offered rewards such as 21-inch TVs, motorbikes and cars in exchange for being sterilised.
A lottery-style system has been developed in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, where every resident undergoing the procedure will be entered into a prize-winning tombola. Deputy chief medical officer Pratap Singh Dutter said: “We were falling behind on our sterilisation targets of 21,000 per year, so the district collector came up with this idea. We hope at least 6,000 people come forward in the next three months to get sterilised.” It is predicted that India’s billion-plus population will overtake China's by 2030.
