Baroque and roll

While Catania is overshadowed by Mount Etna (or ‘A Muntagna’ as the locals refer to it), its baroque-style architecture and beautiful Piazzas will stop you worrying about any natural disasters.

A prize of many empires over the centuries – from Greeks to Romans to Arabs to Normans to Spaniards (to name a few) – this beautiful city is rich in history and coffee shops serving up espressos. While the city was destroyed in 1693 with a volcanic eruption, most buildings have been restored using lava as a main material. For a relaxed picnic with a view, head to the elephant fountain in Piazza Duomo.

On the road: Catania's meandering streets are worth a peruse

For a chic stay in this culture-rich city, D’Orange D’Alcantara combines Italian style and modern sophistication. Equally the Corallo Hotel Taormina is for the more discerning traveller, while the aptly-named NH Bellini offers luxury in the heart of the city.
