Airbnb Vs hotels: new study reveals the most affordable options in popular holiday destinations

Picture the scene: you're booking a weekend away with a group of friends, and the options are splashing out to stay in a hotel or saving some cash and choosing Airbnb instead. Because as everyone knows, Airbnb is always cheaper. Right?

Well, not according to a new infographic, which shows that the price of accommodation varies wildly based on the city and country you're looking at.

Hotel

The research, by Busbud, showed that rather than the common perception that renting a flat on the popular service is always cheaper than crashing in a hotel, the truth varies according to where you're looking to spend your holiday.

For example, in the States, Airbnb was often more expensive than hotels, with rentals in cities including San Francisco, San Diego, New Orleans, Nashville and Austin all costing significantly more.

However, in Washington DC, Los Angeles and New York City, hotels, as expected, were pricier than their for-rent equivalent.

In Europe, however, hotels cost consistently more, apart from in Barcelona, where Airbnb rentals cost nearly double.

Because the majority of Airbnb properties are located in Europe, in eight of the nine cities examined by the study, average Airbnb rates were lower than hotel costs, where the average hotel booking costs nearly twice as much as an Airbnb stay.

However, due to Barcelona's popularity as a tourist destination, and the fact the city requires a special permit to advertise the rental of apartments, on average, Airbnb rates run 81% higher than hotel costs in the city.

The infographic even shows how much more cost-effective it is to book a hotel in these destinations, with Barcelona topping the list at $139.42 (nearly £100) cheaper than local Airbnb rentals.

All in all, this infographic has taught us one very important lessson: do your research before booking a hotel, as it's impossible to make a blanket statement saying that one type of accommodation is always cheaper than another.

Either that, or we need to get to Barcelona as soon as possible. Swanky hotels, we're coming for you...
