Welcome to New York! 11-Minute flights to the Big Apple could become a reality

Ever wished you could just pop into Central Park for a stroll, or have a quick shopping trip on 5th avenue and be back in time for your dinner plans? Well, thanks to a new design for a luxury jet that could become a reality. Though, warning: the plans are very tentative right now.

The newly-designed Antipode jet would be able to get you from London to New York in a staggering 11 minutes, reports The Telegraph. In real-life terms that's faster than you can dry your hair or watch an episode of Friends, and in technical terms - 12,427 miles per hour, or 24 times faster than the speed of sound.

But could an airplane really take the heat of travelling this fast, and more importantly: could we? Joseph Hazeltine, an aerospace engineer at Wyle, which works with NASA, has explained how a special nozzle on the plane would firstly - cool it down by sucking in air and expelling it as counter-flowing jets of air back onto the plane. Secondly - it would be used to muffle the sonic boom. So far, so good.

However, there are some significant remaining technical problems with the plan - most significantly, that the 'scramjet' engine - that would would help the plane accelerate to it's maximum speed - is yet to be invented. Also, the plane would cost £105 million to construct.

Looks like we could be waiting a while until we check into an 11-minute NY-LON flight.

Luckily, we don't have to hedge all of our bets on the Antipode - last year plans for a still very bearable one-hour flight to New York were announced by Airbus. And even if the race for speedier travel to the Big Apple doesn't have a clear winner as yet, budget one-way flights from Norweigen costing just £150 are enough to soften the blow for now.
