Forget New York, Paris, Rome and Istanbul, London has been voted the number one travel destination in the world thanks to its mix of culture, cuisine and tourist attractions.

In the survey carried out by travel website TripAdvisor, London rose six places from its ranking last year to beat Istanbul, Marrakech, Paris, New York and Siem Reap, to the top spot.

Having also reigned supreme in 2012, London is now the first place to have been twice crowned the travel website’s top destination in the world.

TripAdvisor uses positive reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions left on its site by travellers to calculate the ranking of the top 25 destinations overall.

Following London in second and third place this year are Istanbul and Marrakech, while Paris, New York, Siem Reap, Prague, Rome, Hanoi and Ubud make up the remainder of the top 10.

London’s Belgravia saw the highest average rating for its restaurants and dining experiences, with The Five Fields in Chelsea being the overall top-rated restaurant, while Westminster was voted the best area for hotels (Hotel 41 near Buckingham Palace won the warmest praise) and Spitalfields top for attractions.

Clearly chuffed with the result, London Mayor Boris Johnson has said: “London is undoubtedly the cultural capital of the world thanks to our iconic attractions, buzzing entertainment scene and amazing museums and galleries.

“Coupled with our abundance of top-notch hotels and restaurants offering every cuisine one’s taste buds could desire, it is no wonder London has been named the best travel destination.

“It is an incredibly dynamic city with something for everyone.”

While events such as the birth of Princess Charlotte, the Rugby World Cup and incredible exhibitions including the V&A’s Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty saw a record number of tourists visit the city in 2015, 2016’s numbers are said to be on track for an even bigger year.

As the Royal Family gears up to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday with events planned through May and June, and Harry Potter And The Cursed Child opens on the West End from late May, it’s thought 2016 could bring yet another bumper summer for London’s tourism.
