Extraordinary photos of the coldest region in the world

If you're feeling a little chilly, you're about to get a lot colder.

Images of the coldest city in the world have surfaced and they're haunting and spectacular.

Oymyakon, in the far east of Russia, is a remote village generally considered the coldest inhabited area on Earth. With the average temperature for January a blisteringly cold -50°C, it is known, aptly, as the "Pole of Cold". Oymyakon lies a two day drive from the city of Yakutsk, the regional capital, which has the coldest winter temperatures for any city in the world.

With a population of 500, the village was originally a stopover for reindeer herders who would water their flocks at its thermal spring; the only source of natural warmth in a mind-numbingly cold landscape. The coldest ever temperature recorded in Oymyakon was a nerve-tingling -71.2°C. This is the lowest recorded temperature for any permanently inhabited location on Earth and the lowest temperature recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.

These extraordinary photographs were taken by New Zealand-based photographer Amos Chapple, who embarked on a two-day journey to the region in January this year.

"I was wearing thin trousers when I first stepped outside into – 47°C. I remember feeling like the cold was physically gripping my legs, the other surprise was that occasionally my saliva would freeze into needles that would prick my lips," Chapple told weather.com.

Come take a look inside an incredible and magical world - and never bemoan cold UK weather again.
