Three of Britain’s most magnificent off-radar beaches

Seilebost 2.jpg

Forget Exuma Bay’s serene palm tree enclaves, or the powdery white sands of Mozambique.

Some of the world’s most beautiful beaches are right here on our doorstep. Britain’s 2,800km coastline is peppered with picturesque stretches of shore, many of which remain firmly off the tourist trail.

Now Wanderlust magazine, the go-to authority for all things travel, has picked its finest undiscovered beaches to explore across the UK this summer.

Here are three gorgeously remote destinations on their list...

Seilebost, Isle of Harris

Seilebost, Isle of Harris

This Outer Hebrides beach on the Isle of Harris sits within a beguiling panorama of green-blue sea, golden sands and the brooding North Harris hills.

From its wonderfully tranquil shores, you can spot the Sound of Taransay - the largest unpopulated island in Scotland – as well as Ben Luskentyre mountain. The best time to visit is in late spring and summer, when the primroses are in full bloom.

“It’s surrounded by dramatic scenery, including incredible mountain views,” says Wanderlust. “On a sunny day, it can feel like being on a tropical island, and you’ll probably have the place to yourself too.”

Sennen Cove, Cornwall

Sennen Cove

The westernmost surfing spot in the whole of the UK, Sennen Cove is the last patch of sand before you hit Land’s End.

The water here is crystal clear and it’s close to a pretty fishing harbour, where you can catch a boat to the Longships Lighthouse and a grey seals colony nearby.

“Sunsets here are beautiful, as the sun sets directly on the horizon over the sea, leaving a deep glow in the sky, which makes an evening stroll along the beach a wonderful experience,” says Wanderlust.

Oxwich Bay, Gower Peninsula

Oxwich Bay, Gower Peninsula

With gently undulating sand dunes and hazy salt marshes, Oxwich Bay on Wales’ Gower Peninsula is a delight to behold.

It’s less well-known than its neighbour Rhossili Bay – which has garnered a string of accolades for its good looks – but no less inviting for it.

According to Wanderlust, “It’s really worth getting up early to enjoy the sunrise here, as the beach was completely empty, apart from the birds from the nature reserve who were out fishing for their breakfast.”
