From a treehouse in Idaho to a Cornish roundhouse, escape to these remote DIY hideaways around the world

Modular home, Tintaldra, Australia

Sometimes, usually after a particularly gruelling commute, it's tempting to leave the city and all the trappings of modern life far behind and get back to a simpler way of living, at one with nature.

Tech entrepreneur and co-founder of Vimeo, Zack Klein, felt the same. He rounded up a group of friends and together they built themselves the perfect escape – a cabin in the woods. The project turned into an online scrapbook of similar tiny, remote homes from around the world called Cabin Porn, which has had over 10 million unique visitors (interestingly, the most traffic by far comes from the UK), and now a book of the same name.

Ahead of its publication, we’ve selected the most alluring getaways. So in lieu of you and your friends building your own handmade home – as nice as it would be – you can sit back and indulge in a bit of office-chair travel instead.

Cabin Porn: Inspiration For Your Quiet Place Somewhere (£16, Particular Books, an imprint of Penguin Press) is out on 29 September, cabinporn.com
